Zebras, known for their distinctive black and white striped coats. Their famous stripes come in different patterns, unique to each individual. An icon of the African plains and as important and recognizable as lions, elephants and wildebeest, the zebra is actually in trouble. There are three species of zebra in Africa, including the Plains zebra, Mountain zebra and the Grevy’s zebra. Among them, the Mountain zebra, is listed as vulnerable, but the Grevy’s zebra is critically endangered with only about 2,500 individuals left in the wild. Various factors have had a severe impact on zebra populations, in particular hunting for their beautiful skins and habitat destruction. Grevy’s zebras have undergone one of the most substantial reductions of range of any African mammal. Habitat loss is a serious threat to these zebras survival. Due to overgrazing and competition for water, the juvenile Grevy’s zebras have a low survival rate. The Wildlife Conservation Network is working hard to bring numbers back ….
