Cute little George is a wonderfully soft pure Portland wool teddy bear, hand knitted in the naturally coloured creamy white wool which is mixed, during spinning, with just a little Black Welsh Mountain wool to give a beautiful mottled grey yarn with which to make him.
A Little Sheep History
Once common all over Dorset, on the South coast of the UK, the Portland is one of the rarest breeds of sheep in Britain and, today, remains at risk. Portland sheep are a small downland breed with a lovely neat appearance – short horns on the ewes and larger spiraling horns on the rams with a tan to light sandy colouring to the face and legs. They produce a dense soft wool, typically short and crimpy in a creamy off-white colour. Lambs are born with a foxy red coat which changes in the first few months to a creamy white. Sadly this lovely breed is very much at risk of extinction.
